Lighting Up The Holidays
Merry Merry from all of us at 4G!
This time of year means fluctuating temperatures, family gatherings, and neighborhoods glowing with festive lights.
And it’s busy. Between hosting parties and wrapping gifts, the last thing you need is a power outage or a flickering fixture. This month, we’re sharing a quick DIY safety tip to keep your tree lit, along with our top picks for DFW light displays to visit with the family. PLUS one of our favorite snack recipes!

DIY Tip of the Month: The “3-Strand Rule”
Nothing ruins a cozy evening faster than a blown fuse because of too many Christmas lights. To keep your home safe and your lights on, follow these quick rules:
- Check the Wires: Before hanging those lights from the attic, inspect them for frayed wires or loose connections. The Texas heat in storage can sometimes make wire insulation brittle. If they look cracked, toss them!
- The Daisy-Chain Limit: A general rule for traditional incandescent mini-lights is to connect no more than 3 strands end-to-end. If you are using modern LEDs, you can usually connect many more (check the box!), which is why we highly recommend switching to LED this year.
- Watch the Rain: We might not get much snow, but we definitely get rain. Ensure all outdoor extension cords are rated for exterior use and keep connections off the ground or in a watertight box to prevent tripping breakers during a sudden shower.

Community Corner: Best Lights in DFW
Ready to grab some hot cocoa and see the best displays in town? Here are our top local recommendations for this year:
1. The “Griswold” Drive-Through
- Where: Prairie Lights (Grand Prairie)
- Why go: This is the premier drive-through experience in DFW. It features 4 million lights, a stunning light tunnel, and a holiday village. It’s perfect for staying warm in the car while seeing a massive show.
2. The Professional Display
- Where: Holiday at the Arboretum (Dallas Arboretum)
- Why go: If you want a photo-worthy evening, this is it. Famous for its “12 Days of Christmas” gazebos and the Christmas Village, it’s a stunning walk-through experience that feels classic and upscale.
3. The Neighborhood Tradition
- Where: Highland Park (Start near Armstrong Parkway & Preston Road)
- Why go: For an old-school, magical feel, nothing beats Highland Park. The residents hire professional crews to wrap the massive oak trees from base to canopy. It is free, breathtaking, and a true Dallas tradition.

4G’s “High Voltage” Reindeer Chow
Even the best electricians need a sugar rush to keep the lights on!
The Parts List (Ingredients):
- 9 cups Chex Cereal: The “Grid” (Rice or Corn works best).
- 1 cup Chocolate Chips: Semi-sweet (like a good foreman).
- 1/2 cup Peanut Butter: The grounding agent to hold it all together.
- 1/4 cup Butter: To keep things running smooth.
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract: The spark of flavor.
- 1 ½ cups Powdered Sugar: The “Insulation” (a.k.a. snow).
- 1 cup Red & Green M&Ms: The “LED Indicators.”
The Schematics (Instructions):
- Flip the Switch: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir. If it’s not smooth, zap it for another 30 seconds—but don’t overheat it, or you’ll trip the breaker (burn the chocolate). Stir in the vanilla.
- Coat the Wires: Pour the cereal into a large bowl. Pour the chocolate mixture over the top. Stir gently until every piece is evenly coated. (Treat it like old wiring—be gentle so it doesn’t snap!)
- The Static Shake: Pour the coated cereal into a 2-gallon Ziploc bag. Add the powdered sugar “insulation.” Seal the bag tightly (double-check this, trust us) and shake it until everything is white and snowy.
- Final Inspection: Pour onto a baking sheet to cool. Sprinkle with red and green M&Ms for a festive flair.
⚠️ Safety Warning from Duke:
While this fuel is high-performance for humans, chocolate is a “No-Go” zone for dogs. Duke recommends you pay the “Dog Tax” by tossing your pup a plain pretzel before you start mixing!
