How to Make a Sun Oven from a Pizza Box
Don’t Let the Texas Heat Melt Your Summer.
Your home’s electrical system is the last thing you want cooking
The humidity is creeping up, and we are officially entering prime backyard BBQ season. Before you fire up the grill for Memorial Day and switch your AC to full blast, let’s make sure your home’s electrical system isn’t going to sweat under the pressure.
DIY Tips:
The “No Brainer” Power Moves
Texas summer is officially knocking. Stop bleeding energy and putting your expensive appliances at risk before the extreme weather even hits. These three simple power moves keep your cash in your wallet and your home protected:

Your air conditioner is about to run a six-month marathon. Before the real scorchers hit, make sure your dedicated circuits can handle the heavy load. If your lights dim every time the compressor kicks on, it’s time we talk.

Fun fact—ceiling fans cool people, not empty rooms. Make sure yours are spinning counter-clockwise to push that chilly air straight down. If they are wobbling like a mechanical bull, they aren’t helping anyone.

May in DFW means pop-up thunderstorms that pack a serious electrical punch. Don’t leave your expensive TVs and smart appliances at the mercy of a lightning strike. A whole-home surge protector is your absolute best shield.

The Zero-Energy Bake: DIY Solar S’mores Oven
Want to keep the kids entertained while harnessing that blazing Texas sun? Build a solar oven! It’s the ultimate science experiment that ends with dessert.
- The Stash: An empty pizza box, aluminum foil, clear plastic wrap, black construction paper, tape, a ruler, a wooden skewer or stick, and your s’mores ingredients.
- The Play: Cut a flap in the lid of the pizza box (leaving the back edge attached to act as a hinge).
Cover the inside of that flap with aluminum foil to reflect the sun’s rays.
Open the main box lid and tape clear plastic wrap tightly across the window you just cut to trap the hot air inside.
Line the bottom of the box with black paper to absorb the heat. Put your graham crackers and marshmallows inside, close the main lid, and use your skewer to prop the foil flap open toward the sun.
Zero electricity, 100% gooey goodness.
