The GFI Gut Check
Every GFCI outlet (the ones with the little buttons — kitchens, bathrooms, garage, patio) deserves a 10-second checkup after a long summer of humidity, sprinklers, and pool splash. Press TEST — it should click and kill the power. Press RESET — everything comes back. No click, no cutoff? That outlet’s safety net is gone, and it’s time to call us.

The Cord Retirement Party
Before coiling up the summer extension cords, give each one an exit interview. Nicks, soft spots, melted patches, or bent prongs? It goes straight to the trash, not the garage shelf. A sun-baked cord is a fire waiting for a fall project. (And if a cord has become a permanent fixture outside, that’s not a cord — that’s a missing outlet. We can fix that.)

The Garage Fridge Reality Check
That trusty second fridge in the garage has spent all summer fighting 110° air, and it’s been billing you for every round. Vacuum the coils, check the door seal with a dollar bill (if it slides out easily, the gasket’s shot), and if it’s a pre-2010 model, do the math. An old garage fridge can cost more per year to run than it saves in bulk-buy brisket.

Where to Spend Labor Day Weekend

Three days off, zero excuses. Here’s where DFW is closing out the summer:

TBAAL Riverfront Jazz Festival — Three evenings of jazz, blues, and R&B under the Fair Park sky, with legends and rising stars sharing the bill. It’s become a Dallas Labor Day tradition for a reason. Pack a lawn chair, come hungry for the food vendors, and stay past dark — that’s when the good stuff happens.

The Fort Worth Herd Cattle Drive — Twice Daily, Free Real Texas cowhands drive real longhorns down East Exchange Avenue twice a day — 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. — and it costs exactly nothing. Catch the morning run, let the kids gawk at the horns, then make a day of the Stockyards. It’s the most Texas thing you can do.

Rangers Baseball at Globe Life Field — Sept. 4–6 vs. Tampa Bay. The Rangers host the Rays all weekend, including a Sunday matinee. Globe Life Field has a retractable roof and industrial-strength AC. Big-league baseball in 72° comfort while it’s 98° outside? That’s an engineering marvel with hot dogs.
