Landscape Lighting Transformers & Repair

If half the yard went dark, it’s almost always the transformer, a chewed wire, or a corroded connection. We diagnose in one visit and fix what’s actually broken.

The usual suspects

  • Tripped GFCI or transformer breaker. The simplest fix, and worth checking before you call. If it keeps tripping, something downstream is shorting.
  • Failed timer or photocell. The lights work but come on at noon, or never. Often a quick replacement.
  • Cut or nicked cable. Edgers, aerators, new plantings, fence posts and the occasional squirrel. One nick can take out a whole run.
  • Corroded connections. Sprinklers and Dallas humidity work their way into unsealed splices. Lights flicker, dim, then quit.
  • Voltage drop. Fixtures at the end of a long run look noticeably dimmer than the rest. It’s usually a design problem, not a broken part.
  • Worn-out transformer. Older units that ran halogen at full load for years eventually give up. You’ll see buzzing, heat, or nothing at all.

How we diagnose

We start at the transformer and work outward. We test the output voltage, check each run, find the break or bad splice, and measure the voltage at the far fixtures. You get the cause, the fix and the price before we repair anything. We repair systems we didn’t install too, whatever the brand.

Replacing a transformer

If yours needs replacing, we size the new one to your actual load with headroom to spare, and use a multi-tap model where long runs need it so every fixture gets the right voltage. A built-in or smart timer comes standard. If you’re still on halogen, this is the moment to switch to LED, since the new transformer can often be smaller and cost less.

Quick answers

  • Why did only some of my lights go out? Usually one run has a bad splice or a cut wire, while the others are fine. That’s good news, because it narrows the search.
  • Is it worth repairing an old system? Usually, yes. Good fixtures and wiring can last decades. Most repairs cost far less than starting over.
