Low-voltage landscape lighting

Twelve volts, all the drama. Low-voltage systems run off a transformer, so the wiring is safe to bury shallow, safe around water, and cheap to run all night.

That’s the short version. Here’s why almost every landscape lighting system we install in Dallas is low-voltage.

How it works

A transformer plugs into an outdoor GFCI outlet and steps your home’s 120 volts down to about 12. From there, a low-voltage cable runs through the beds to each fixture: path lights along the walk, uplights at the base of the live oak, wash lights on the stone. Because the voltage is so low, the cable only needs a few inches of cover. We don’t trench the yard, and the lawn recovers in about a week.

Why it beats line-voltage for most yards

  • Safer around people and water. Kids, dogs, sprinkler heads, a shovel in the flower bed: 12 volts doesn’t turn any of them into an emergency.
  • Easier to change. Planting a new tree next spring? We can move a fixture or add one without rewiring.
  • Cheaper to run. Paired with LED fixtures, a full front-yard system often draws less power than a single old halogen floodlight.
  • Built for automation. A timer, photocell or smart controller turns it on at dusk and off at midnight, and you never think about it again.

What we design for

Good low-voltage lighting isn’t just fixtures in the ground. We plan the layout for voltage drop so the last light on the run is as bright as the first, size the transformer with room to grow, and pick warm 2700K–3000K color so the house glows instead of glares. Every connection is sealed against Dallas rain, sprinklers and clay soil that never stops moving.

Quick answers

  • Is low-voltage bright enough? Yes. Modern LED fixtures put out plenty of light. The difference between dim and dramatic is placement and aim, not voltage.
  • Do I need a permit? Low-voltage systems usually don’t need one, but anything new at the outlet or circuit is done to code by a licensed electrician.
